South Milwaukee Middle School is very proud of 8th-grade students Erik, Kathryn, Leilah, and Rebecca, who competed in this year’s event in the Foreign Language at the Elementary School level for the memorized poem, “Fiesta en El Mar” by Andres Diaz Marrero.

Leilah was awarded a well-earned and distinguished second-place award, while Erik, Kathryn and Rebecca came away with first-place honors.

The state contest features students ranging in age from middle school to high school, with native and non-native Spanish-speaking students able to perform via the Zoom conferencing platform in a variety of categories based on their level of Spanish experience. Competitive categories included poetry, both memorized and unmemorized narration, and theatre presentation.

After the students finished and uploaded their Zoom recordings to the appropriate categories, Spanish teachers from around Wisconsin judged the students' efforts, awarding first, second or third-place finishes for level of performance and excellence in the Spanish language.

2024 marks the third consecutive year that first-place honors have been earned by South Milwaukee Middle School students.
